Hummingbird Hawk-moth and Paederia Vine Earrings

市街地でも見られる身近な蛾で、いつも花の蜜を求めて飛び回っているホシホウジャク。
ハチとスズメを合わせたような見た目から「蜂雀」、そこに腹部の白い斑点模様＝星がついていることから「星蜂雀」という名がつきました。

ホバリングしながら花の蜜を吸うという共通点から、よくハチドリと間違われますが、名前に「雀」とつくくらいなので、見た目の印象から勘違いしてしまうのも無理はありません。

私にとっては、何度か幼虫から育て羽化させたこともあり、とても愛着のあるホシホウジャク。
むしとたねとして一番初めに制作したモチーフです。

ペアの植物は、食草のヘクソカズラ。
名前のインパクトが強いですが、ドライフラワーの花材としてもよく使われており、艶のある実はホシホウジャクと同じく、とても愛らしいです。

The Hummingbird Hawk-moth is a familiar moth often seen in urban areas, constantly fluttering about in search of flower nectar.
Its Japanese name, Hoshi-houjaku (Star Bee-Sparrow), derives from its appearance—resembling a blend of a bee and a sparrow—along with the white, star-like spots on its abdomen.

Because it hovers while sipping nectar, it is frequently mistaken for a hummingbird. However, given that its Japanese name includes the word "sparrow," it is entirely natural to be misled by its visual impression.

Having raised them from caterpillars to emergence several times, I hold a deep affection for the Hummingbird Hawk-moth. It is the very first motif created for mushi to tane.

The paired plant is the Paederia vine, its host plant.
Though its name carries a strong impact, it is actually quite popular in dried flower arrangements. Its glossy berries are just as captivating and lovely as the Hummingbird Hawk-moth itself.
