Lapis Lazuli Scarab and Brood Ball Earrings

生息地で色が異なるオオセンチコガネ。その中でも瑠璃色の個体をルリセンチコガネと呼びます。正式名称ではなく通称のようなもので、瑠璃色の個体群は紀伊半島でしか見られません。

オオセンチコガネは糞虫とも呼ばれ、その宝石のような美しさに反して、食しているのは動物の糞です。鹿が多く住む奈良公園では、多くのルリセンチコガネを観察することができ、たくさんの糞を分解して土に還す自然の循環作業に大きく貢献してくれています。

そして糞虫といえば、ファーブル昆虫記の代表であるフンコロガシ（スカラベ）を思い浮かべる人も多いのではないでしょうか。
オオセンチコガネも、転がしこそしませんが糞で育児塊を作って子育てする点は共通しています。

青く美しいルリセンチコガネをモチーフに、耳飾りを仕立てたい──そうなるとペアにするモチーフには、この育児塊以外に考えられるものはありません。
ルリセンチコガネの育児塊は細長い形をしていますが、今回はファーブル昆虫記へのオマージュとして、フンコロガシの育児球であるナシ玉の形を採用し、そこにルリセンチコガネと強い共生関係にある鹿の角模様を入れました。

ルリセンチコガネの命の営みを体現したような、とてもお気に入りの作品となりました。

The earth-boring dung beetle varies in color depending on its habitat. Among them, the lapis lazuli-colored individuals are commonly known as Ruri-senchi-kogane.

Contrary to their jewel-like beauty, they feed on animal droppings. In Nara Park, home to a large population of deer, numerous lapis lazuli beetles greatly contribute to the natural cycle by breaking down these droppings and returning them to the earth.

When thinking of dung beetles, many might recall the scarab featured in Fabre's Book of Insects.
Although the earth-boring dung beetle does not roll dung, it shares the trait of creating brood masses from it to raise its young.

Wishing to craft earrings featuring the beautiful blue Ruri-senchi-kogane, I could think of no better paired motif than this brood mass. While the actual brood mass of this beetle is elongated, for this piece, I adopted the pear-shaped brood ball of the scarab as an homage to Fabre's Book of Insects. Into this design, I incorporated an antler pattern, symbolizing the deer that shares a strong symbiotic relationship with the beetle.

Embodying the very life cycle of the lapis lazuli beetle, this is a piece of jewelry that I am deeply fond of.

Nature of Botanical Dyes

糸に使用している染料は、タデアイ（蓼藍）です。
藍染めは草木染めの中でも特に日光堅牢度は良好ですが、摩擦による色移りは他の草木染めよりしやすい傾向があるので（一般的なジーンズと同程度）お気をつけください。

While indigo boasts exceptional lightfastness among natural botanical dyes, it is naturally more prone to color transfer through friction compared to others (similar to standard denim). We kindly ask you to be mindful of this characteristic when wearing the piece.
