Akebi Leaf Moth and Akebi Vine Earrings

大きな眼状紋と独特のポーズで認知度の高いアケビコノハの幼虫。
左右に２対、計４個の目玉模様があることから、上から見ても横から見てもぎょろりと見据えられているような、隙のない構造をしています。
身体の中央付近には網目模様が入り、全体に淡い水色の点が散りばめられていることから、眼状紋を惑星、網目を銀河、斑点を星々と見立て、そこにエイリアンのような見た目が加わり「宇宙イモムシ」とも呼ばれています。
複数の昆虫館でも大型の模型でディスプレイされていたりと、とても愛されているイモムシであることが分かりますね。

イモムシ好きには堪らないこのアケビコノハの幼虫。かくいう私もずっとずっと探しているのですが、まだ出会えていません。
生息地に条件はなく、広く分布しているはずなのですが、どうしてでしょうか……。

ペアの植物は、もちろんアケビの実。
どちらも華やかな造形をしているので、装身具に相応しいようにと鮮やかな紅色で仕立ててみました。差し色として使いやすいので、一番よく身につけているモチーフです。

The caterpillar of the Akebi leaf moth is widely recognized for its large eyespots and distinctive poses.
Featuring two pairs of eyespots on each side—four in total—it possesses a flawless defensive structure, appearing to glare intensely at you whether viewed from above or the side.

With a reticulated pattern running near the center of its body and pale light-blue dots scattered throughout, it is sometimes affectionately called the "Cosmic Caterpillar." The eyespots resemble planets, the reticulation a galaxy, the dots stars, and its overall appearance is delightfully otherworldly.
Displayed as large models in various insect museums, it is clear just how beloved this caterpillar truly is.

Irresistible to caterpillar enthusiasts, I too have been searching for this Akebi leaf moth caterpillar for a very long time, yet I have not been fortunate enough to encounter one.
It is supposed to be widely distributed without specific habitat requirements, so I wonder why it remains so elusive...

The paired plant is, of course, the fruit of the Akebi vine.
Since both possess such captivating and ornate forms, I crafted them in a vivid crimson, perfectly befitting a piece of jewelry. As it serves beautifully as an accent color, it has become the motif I wear most frequently.
