Fourteen-spotted Ladybird and Mulberry Earrings

上翅に14個の白斑紋を持つことから名がついているシロジュウシホシテントウ。
基本型は全身黄褐色ですが、こちらは色彩変異の暗色型をモチーフにしています。暗色型は脚だけが黄褐色で、そのスタイリッシュな配色バランスに一目惚れしたことを覚えています。
シロジュウシホシテントウには他に紅型もあり、こちらは地が朱色で紋は黒が12個と、はて、シロジュウシホシとは一体……といった具合に不思議な分類となっています。上翅以外の構造や、餌の種類で分類しているのかもしれません。

ペアのモチーフには、シロジュウシホシテントウの餌である、キジラミ類が多く見られる桑を選びました。
桑は蚕にとって大切な木です。桑をキジラミから守ったシロジュウシホシテントウを、蚕が生み出した絹糸でもって形作る──面白い縁ですね。

本当は脚の色をもう少し明るくしたかったんですが、桑とのバランスも考えて今回はシックな配色でまとめてみました。
てんとう虫はかわいらしいモチーフとして使われがちですが、洗練された大人の女性にも身につけていただける作品に仕上がったと思います。

The Shiro-jushi-hoshi-tentou (Fourteen-spotted Ladybird) is named for the fourteen white spots on its elytra (wing covers).
While the standard type is entirely yellowish-brown, this piece features a dark-colored variant. In this dark morph, only the legs remain yellowish-brown. I remember falling in love at first sight with this stylish color balance.
There is also a red variant, which has a vermilion base and twelve black spots. One might wonder, "What happened to the fourteen spots?" It is quite a mysterious classification. Perhaps they are classified based on structures other than the elytra, or by their diet.

For the paired motif, I chose the mulberry tree, where psyllids—the ladybird's prey—are often found.
The mulberry is an essential tree for silkworms. To craft a ladybird that protected the mulberry from psyllids using the very silk thread produced by the silkworms—it is a fascinating connection.

Truthfully, I wanted to use a slightly brighter thread color for the legs, but considering the balance with the mulberry, I opted for a chic color scheme this time.
Ladybirds are often used as simply "cute" motifs, but I believe this piece has been finished with an elegance that sophisticated adult women can wear beautifully.

Nature of Botanical Dyes

絹糸に使用している染料は、ロッグウッド、インドアカネ、ゴバイシです。
桑の葉に使用しているゴバイシのグレージュがアイボリーに近づく以外に大きな色の変化はなく、日光堅牢度も良好です。

The silk threads are naturally dyed using logwood, Indian madder, and gallnut.
Aside from the greige hue of the gallnut used for the mulberry leaves gradually approaching ivory, there will be no significant color changes, and the overall lightfastness is excellent.
