Pellucid Hawk Moth and Gardenia Earrings

つぶらな瞳、うさぎの耳のような触角、うぐいす色の背中に白いお腹。腰から下は赤茶と黄であしらわれ、尾にある毛束は扇のような開閉式。翅の鱗粉は羽化後の羽ばたきで振り落とされ、翅脈を残して完全に透き通っている──。
「大きな透かす翅」と書いてオオスカシバという名のスズメガの一種です。

オオスカシバはよくハチに擬態していると言われますが、色も形もあまり似ているようには思えません。よりハチにそっくりな蛾にスカシバという名の蛾がおり（セスジスカシバ、クビアカスカシバなど）名前が似ていることから、そちらと混同されているのかもしれません。

このオオスカシバですが、身近な蛾の中でも一二を争うほど人気があるといっても過言ではないでしょう。幼虫の食草はクチナシですが、オオスカシバに会いたいがために庭にクチナシを植えているという話もよく聞きます。

そんなオオスカシバのペアとなるモチーフは、もちろんクチナシ。
背中のうぐいす色が美しく、この子のイメージカラーでもあるため、緑色をベースに仕立ててみました。
白いクチナシと合わせて、とても爽やかな印象に仕上がったと思います。

Round eyes, antennae resembling rabbit ears, an olive-green back, and a white underbelly. Its lower body is adorned with reddish-brown and yellow, finishing with a tail tuft that opens and closes like a fan. The scales on its wings are shaken off by its very first flutters after emergence, leaving the wings completely transparent save for the delicate veins. This is the Oo-sukashiba (Large Clearwing), a species of hawk-moth.

Although it is often said that this moth mimics bees, to me, neither its color nor its shape appears particularly bee-like. There is another family of moths in Japan—also known as Sukashiba (such as clearwing borers)—that bear a much stronger resemblance to bees. The confusion likely stems from their similar names.

It is no exaggeration to say that this is one of the most beloved among our familiar moths. Its caterpillars feed on gardenia leaves, and I often hear of people planting gardenias in their gardens simply in hopes of encountering this moth.

Naturally, the paired motif for this piece is the gardenia. Because the beautiful olive-green of its back is its signature color, I crafted this piece using green as the base. Paired with the white gardenia, I believe it creates a beautifully refreshing impression.

糸に使用している染料は、タデアイ、エンジュ、ゴバイシ、インドアカネ、コガネバナです。
おおむねどの日光堅牢度も良好で、ゴバイシを使用したグレージュ部分のみベージュに変化していきます。

The threads are naturally dyed using Japanese indigo, pagoda tree, gallnut, Indian madder, and Baikal skullcap.
All of these generally possess excellent lightfastness; however, only the greige portions dyed with gallnut will gradually transition into beige.
